Dr. Shailesh Shahi has been awarded an Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) Educational Travel Award to present his research findings at the 2018 ACTRIMS Forum meeting in San Diego, California. Dr. Shahi is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the laboratory of Dr. Ashutosh Mangalam, and is working on a research project to decipher the role of gut microbiota in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS). His work provides evidence that the human commensal Prevotella histicola can suppress MS in mice as efficiently as Copaxone® by regulating systemic immune responses. These findings highlight the significance of gut microbiota in immune system homeostasis and offer a therapeutic option for patients with autoimmune disease.
